When it comes to looking for a new mattress to purchase, many consumers want to make sure they get a mattress free of toxins, as well as good for the environment.
In the last year or so, Nectar has really skyrocketed to one of the most popular bed-in-a-box brands available.
Is the Nectar Mattress Eco Friendly?
The answer is yes. Nectar mattress is an eco friendly option, as it uses a tencel cover and a vegetable based polyurethane for its memory foam.
These foams are not only tested twice in the first year; they are also re-certified annually.

Nectar Mattress Cover
As previously stated, Nectar’s cooling covers are made up of tencel, along with high quality organic long staple cotton. This layer circulates air, while wicking away heat while you sleep.
Nectar never uses chemicals to make up this cover. Instead, the cotton was grown with all natural fertilizers and rain.
All of Nectar’s cotton is hand selected, Fair Trade & GOTS non-GMO certified organic cotton.
The cotton is then loomed and dyed with low impact dyes.
Polyurethane Memory Foam
Most of the Nectar mattresses memory foam is comprised of vegetable base polyurethane.
There are 3 levels of memory foam used in the Nectar mattress:
- A lush 1″ 4lb semi-open fast-recovery gel memory foam
- 3″ 3.5lb memory foam with medical grade cooling and recovery levels
- 2.2 lb high-density base foam
These foams meet the most rigorous of standards, when it comes to emissions, performance, durability and content.
Simply put, all of this together makes the Nectar mattress free of dust mites, and latex free.
You can read further about each layer below:
Quilted Gel Memory Foam
Nectar’s first layer is made up of 3″ of quilted gel memory foam.
This layer is known as the comfort layer, and provides a really slow response to pressure.
You will find that you seem to sink in to this layer, as it contours to your body well.
The end result, is great pressure relief.
Gel Memory Foam
This layer is a transitional 1″ gel memory foam layer, meant to aim at back and neck support.
This layer is “semi-lush”, which puts Nectar on the semi firm side; the most popular type of mattresses overall.
The transitional layer is a way of easing the sleeper into the firmer base below. It is literally a transition from the softest layer (layer 1) to the firmer layers below.
Adaptive Hi-Core Memory Foam
The final layer of the gel memory foams, is the Adaptive Hi-Core Memory Foam.
The purpose of this layer, is to provide support over your whole body, keeping your spine in proper alignment.
This layer is a whopping 6″ thick, and is made of high density poly foam.
All of Nectar mattresses memory foams are CertiPUR-US® certified. This is a global rating, meaning that Nectar:
- Uses no ozone depleters
- No PBDEs, TDCPP or TCEP (“Tris”) flame retardants
- No mercury, lead and heavy metals
- No phthalates regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission
- No formaldehyde
- Has Low VOC (Volatile Organic Compound) emissions for indoor air quality (less than 0.5 parts per million)
Breathable Base Layer
The 4th and final layer of the Nectar mattress, is known as the breathable base layer.
This layer is really thick and dense, having a rating of 2.2 ILD.
It is designed to allow great airflow, all while drawing in fresh air through its molded channels.
Paired together with the memory foam layers, Nectar is built to provide you a cooling, soft sleep.
Nectar Mattress and Sinkage
Since Nectar falls more into the semi-firm class of mattress, you can expect sinkage to be a little less than other mattresses.
In sinkage tests, where many mattresses sink around 6.75″, the Nectar has a sinkage of right around 6″.
So you can see, it doesn’t sink quite as much. But, because it does have such a soft 1st layer, there is adequate sinkage altogether.
What this tells us, is that all of the layers of Nectar work together well with the base layer and cover.
Nectar mattress excels when it comes to providing edge support. This is surprising, as most memory foam brands seem to fall short in this category.
However, despite different positions, across different edges, the Nectar was able to provide adequate support. This makes them superior to other memory foam mattresses, in this category.
Mattress Size Guide
Many people do not take into consideration that their mattress size may play a part in their overall comfort.
There are several factors to consider when choosing a mattress size:
- Sleeping type
- Do you have a partner
- Do pets sleep with you
- Do you prefer width or height
- Is it for an adult or teen
To help you make the choice, Nectar has put together a mattress size guide, that you can find here:NECTAR SIZE GUIDE
What Type of Sleeper Are You?
Mattresses are not one size fits all. The same goes for your sleep type.
Every mattress is designed in a way in which it’s best for certain types of sleepers, as well as body types.
So, which types of sleepers is Nectar best for?
Back: Nectar scores the best overall for back sleepers. The reason for this is simple. It works very good for light and heavy sleepers.
It is suitable for average weight back sleepers as well. But, it does score a little lower.
Side: Nectar does well across the board with side sleepers. Rather you are light, average of a heavier person, the score doesn’t change much with side sleepers.
It misses the mark slightly in scoring, when you compare back sleepers for light or heavy persons. But, overall it is a great choice.
Stomach: If you are a lighter weight stomach sleeper, you may not fare the best with Nectar. While it does score decent, it is not as high as for back or side sleepers.
For average or heavier people, Nectar receives a respectable score. This score is right on par with the scores for a side sleeper, if your weight falls into these categories.
